Malaria Drugs..HELP!!

Hi all,

Myself and my partner are off to Kenya over Christmas and have been told we need to take anti-malaria drugs. After talking to my GP she reccommened Lariam - but after taliking to some friends they informed me that you cannot dive with this and it has really bad side effects! So i had a quick browse on the internet and also found that Malarone is a good one to take as it has less side effects!

Can anyone reccommend any drugs they took? Any tips as to how to deter the mossies will be most appreciated!

I took malerone last year, and had no problems with it at all - except the paying for it bit. They aren't cheap!

We used a mozzie spray with DEET, and i came home with not one single bite.

Wasnt there a big fuss about products with DEET in its contents a couple years back? I seem to recall my well travelled friends stopped using them because of it.

50% deet on the skin and the stronger (80%ish) stuff on Mozzy nets, meshes and other surfaces. It is like having a forcefield around you - they fly towards you and bounce off and head the other way!

Or drinks *loads* of G&Ts - not scientifically approved but a good excuse to get sloshed.

I got very very vivid dreams from Larium. Bad bad stuff.

I am far to old to even contemplate hicky's.

Actually, I must apologise. I did get bitten. by a fish.

It may not have been the DEET that kept the mozzies away, but the fact that we were a big group, it was all inclusive, and after diving, the regular order was: '15 beers and a rum and coke please'

Yes, there is some evidence that it causes cancer. However, it's still better than getting malaria, dengue and a whole host of other mosquito born diseases.

I take malarone. The big advantage is that you only have to take it for 2 days before and a week after, unlike the other choice, which is doxycycline.
