I looked into Laser Eye Surgery (in detail) at one stage.

My thoughts are that I am lucky enough to be able to get away with wearing daily disposable contact lenses, and I only have one pair of eyes that albeit short sighted work very well, so why induce risk and potentially get a problem I potentially can't cure?

Just my take on it. YMMV!

Mark.

Well I had my eyes done about 10 years ago now.

The only problem I get is at dusk, when it is that in-between daylight and full night, when things can be a little blurry.

Overall, I'm glad I had it done, and remember that the surgery has progressed in leaps and bounds since then. I had it done in the days of scraping the surface with a scalpel and staring fixedly at a red dot. None of this computer focusing stuff in those days - and by God did I concentrate on that dot.

What I would say is that I won't be getting it re-done as I get older. I know that things will get long sighted as time goes on, but I can live with that.

I have been considering having some form of laser eye surgery done for some time. I have been short sighted all my life (AFAIK - which, I think, is why I have poor facial recognition). I have worn contact lenses for 35+ years.

Recently, my short sight started deteriorating, and I have tried bi focal contact lenses, normal contacts with 'magnifiers' for reading. The bi focals are the best compromise.

My optician (about same age - 49) will not have his eyes done because he considers the risk of problems greater than the effort of using contacts.

The owner of my local, and now defunct LDS, had laser surgery done a few years back and I know he was VERY happy with the results.

Deciding to have voluntary eye surgery is a VERY difficult decision to make.

Hi I'm 50 so the same age as your father and I had epi-lasik at optimax in Bristol in January this year, my sight was -3 in both eyes and -1.25 astigmatisum. I thought long and hard about having it done and was also informed I would probly have to wear specs for reading still. Yes I still have to wear specs for reading but I don't have to wear them anymore for distance, and I don't have any problem with my night vision either.
I had to wear specs because of being short sighted from the age of 10 and now I have better than 20:20 vision in both eyes it's fantastic I could go on about how it's changed my life but I'd be a bit of a bore. If I had the option of doing it again I'd do it tomorrow but preferably 20 years ago.
Good luck to your father whatever he decides, and feel free to PM me if you want any more details.
Doug

Epi-Lasik on both eyes, bit painful for 3 or 4 days but I put htat down more to the horrible contact lenses they use as bandages. You might guess I never got on with contacts
