...but while we're criticizing about another's poor use of the English language we really must be bullet-proof ourselves.

I would tend to agree unless the message becomes virtually unintelligible as a consequence.

Not wanting to pick on a person in particular, but there was an instance recently of someone whose shorthand was so short that I had to spend time deciphering what was written before I could comprehend the message.

When it gets to that level I just move on ... the odd BTW, WTF, u etc I think is fine ...but the wholesale removal of vowels is not on....afterall what would they do on Countdown if that were more widely adopted?

Are you talking about true TXT speak, or the use of internet acronyms?

If its the former, then I find it bizarrely pointless, if its the latter I find it ok.

I think it would be holding back the tide to try to stop the use of LMAO, LOL, WTF, HTH etc, they convey particular sentiments very well.

My grammar/spelling/punctuation is very poor but I would rather make a valid contribution to the board in poor english than to not contribute because I didn't have time to write it all out longhand or because I feared the attack of the pedants that follow.

A lot of my posts are scribbled very quickly between meetings, while compiling code etc and their expression is often determined by the time I have available to me. I would rather contribute in that time than try and pass an english exam.

Sorry, criticism of someones language skills can be incredibly insulting, and can poke an someones true insecurities, to criticise them based on grammar and not content is quite sad IMHO (sorry couldn't resist).

I would like to think that if I was posting on a serious topic and someone truly found the post incomprehensible, they would pm etc to clarify.

My 2p

Conor

I think I may have misconstrued this whole thread.

I thought it began as a general comment about 21st century electronic shorthand, not a dig at any posters on here.

Many apologies... I don't want anyone to think i was bullying people into posting differetly. My comments have only been in relation to texts i get/ send!

(My ex is the worlds worst at using TXT SPK and I find it highly irritating, but it might just be the person sending them!)

Don't worry Scubee, I may have got the wrong end of the stick, and gone off on one.

It did,
it was - but just to make them think.

From a post earlier in this thread I noticed that 'cool' had been txt translated to 'kewl.' How is that shorter than the original, and correct, word? Or is it just kewler?

My phone has a querty keyboard so I txt the full English text......
