err does this mean that she used to be a man or is it due to hormonal or steroid drugs or similar

I never really thought about it till I randomly browsed that on the bbc website.

Wasn't there an American 'female' tennis player whose gender was questioned whenever he/she played? Sometime in the era of Virginia Wade.
