Have you tried looking at MapMyRun.com -- Mapping your running routes has never been easier!?

Its based on GoogleEarth, and lets you map out the course that you walk/jog/run/cycle, giving you distance and can calculate calories burned...

According to Dr.Gillian last night (you are what you eat) climbing can burn off 1000 cals an hour. Not so good if you then sink a Brown one on the way home, like we do. So get climbing and watch those pounds drop off.

Cool, I'm burning 1,600 calories a day by cycling into work! Well, 1,600 calories when I get up early enough to cycle to work...

In runners world magazine they show how long it takes to burn off a certain amount of food. This month:

Xmas selection box:
mars delight, milky way, mars bar, galaxy, snack size snickers (or marathon!!!), snack size mars bar, maltesers, and twix finger. Some 1,448 calories.

Here we go, either
i) 2hr28min running at 10min mile pace
ii) 3hr9min x-country skiing
iii) 4hr30mins ice skating

Ok, this is a bit excessive, usually it's like a muffin and a late but you get the idea.

I took up running in may last year, I've lost a couple of stone so far, I reckon there's still another 1.5 left to come off. It's hard to start, but don't be worried about taking walking breaks. I've started keeping a training diary since new year and it's nice to note how you feel, run times, sleeping (it's really improving!), etc. I'm running about 3 times a week at the moment (8km runs), swimming 1.5km's 4 mornings a week, and gym sessions 2/3 times a week too (I'm still a fatty though!).

Good luck (you fat git ), Lloyd

Oh Bu66er!

Just went to the gym for my Fitness assessment, and have been told that I'm not fit enough to take the assessment!

My Blood Pressure is too high, so I have to go see my GP before I can take the fitness assessment!

Hell's teeth!

At least you now know you HAVE to do something about it!

Get to the doc's... he'll tell you to go to a gym...

I can see a pattern starting to take shape here...

Still, if you walk to the gym and then back to the doc's a few times, you'll be getting fitter! (I'm not helping here - am I? )

Pete

OK - I have an idea (I'm not claiming it's a good one, just an idea )

I've been reading through this thread and there are a few of us who seem to be running/jogging a couple of miles a couple of times a week but aiming for more this year.

How about we choose a 10k race some time over the summer and a group of us run it in aid of the RNLI or DDRC or similar charity? I have never run more than about 4 miles before so it will be a bit a bit of a challenge for me and I won't be aiming to do it at speed but it will give me the motivation to go out and train and would be in a good cause and if a few of us do it, could be a bit sociable too.

Is anyone else up for this?

Now, I'm not really a runner (I think I've completed two 5km races since leaving school a errrr... "few" years ago) and don't usually do running, but I think I could probably be up for a 5km race (in the South East) in the summer!

Any other takers? Could we run as part of "YD- for RNLI" (so that the YD charity of the year gets the money, and YD gets the praise?)

Andrew

I would be up for a (preferably) 10km (that's enough fear to keep actually running) somewhere in the South East area.

Also I run on my own which, in the dark, has been suggested is not very sensible. Does anyone else either run in North London or know of any OK (not too competitive) running clubs in that neck of the woods?
