Fresh water can kill you!

More evidence that qe should avoid quarries! Read to the end and you'll see it's important for us to avoid too much fresh water and have salt water flowing through our veins! :

Woman dies after Wii competition | The Register

A mother of three died from water intoxication after a radio station drinking competition, a California coroner said on Saturday. Jennifer Strange, 28, competed in Sacramento station KDND 107.9's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest to try to win Nintendo's console for her children.

Contestants were handed half-pint bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes for the first hour, and then larger bottles to up the ante.

Laura Rios, Strange's colleague at Radiological Associates of Sacramento, said: "She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad. She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her." Her body was discovered at her home on Friday, Associated Press reports.

Assistant coroner Ed Smith said preliminary evidence revealed evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death".

The winner was the last contestant to go to the toilet. Fellow contestant James Ybarra said: "They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy. They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station staff were "stunned" at the tragedy. He said: "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred."

Healthy kidneys are able to excrete about 1 to 1.5 litres of water per hour. Problems occur at greater volumes when the narrow range of salt concentrations they must maintain are upset. Commonly, water intoxication causes death by lowering the concentration of sodium in the blood to a dangerous level, causing cells to rupture as water swells them by osmosis. ®

Extremely interesting post and such an unnecessary death

It does, however, underline my rantings of everything in balance and that if your body craves it, it probably needs it. My body has always been very clear with me about what it wants and I try to always provide. Mostly iron via red wine

So, all of you who nag me about the large quantities of salt I use, I am countering large quantities of others substances in my blood stream, probably sugar, and will not go mad.

i don't think its to do with holding in the urine more than likely the quantity of water in the body as a whole. I know a girl who passed out after going clubbing for the night, the club was so hot she was drinking loads of water and passed out an hour after she left while sat on the loo, the doctors said something about having too much fluid in the body. (before anyone asks she wasn't on drugs or drank too much)

Well it figures doesn't it. Dilution
As in the original post : "Healthy kidneys are able to excrete about 1 to 1.5 litres of water per hour. Hence my reference to salt intake that "the powers that be" try to minimise to a specific amount. I personally consider dictating a limit utter bollox as it's all relative to our other intake

Water intoxication is how Leah Betts died. Took an E and her mates said she had to drink loads. Unfortunately she wasn't sweating in a club but sitting at home.

Dizzy bint.

As every clubber knows, you have a bottle of water then a vodka lemon then a bottle of water then a vodka lemon..... otherwise you get the cold sweats and start shaking.

Is that per amount per kidney or in total? Is it also possible that because she was 'holding her wee for a WII' the kidneys output was reduced because there was nowhere for it to go. The story dosn't tell us how much she drank over what period, nor if the quantity of water to be consumed differed for women and men.

There's a binge drinking bar near here where silly drinking and vomiting games could lead to a similar tragedy.

Edit: a later story reports the quantity as 6.62 litres.

A little off topic but I was thinking about the same thing. I was always appalled when the media these kinds of deaths to Ecstasy. It was a case of twisting the facts to suit their agenda. Certainly she wouldn't have died if she hadn't taken Ecstasy but, equally, she could have taken Ecstasy and lived. Education is the key, for me, here. Thousands of clubbers take Ecstasy every weekend, probably more than ever since the price has dropped, and very few die as a result!

Cheers/Nic
