| Non Diving Posts: Discuss Aerospace boffins/plane spotters required in the Non-Diving Related Forums forums: Hi All, I have just read an artcle talking about the F-15E. Apparently this can do Mach2.................... but only over ... |

| Geek here! Specs here: F-15 Eagle Specifications F15C/D can do M2.5 but the E is limit to around 1.9-2 (1433kts) at high altitude. The over-water bit is probably a limit in the country being overflown. You cannot (legally or you'll get your balls burst) fly supersonic overland in the UK below a certan level (can't remember what it is) and if you do SS over the sea you must be heading out from land too (as the boom travels in front of the aircraft) and finally there is a minimum distance away from the coast when you can drop a boom. What was the article?

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits. |

| im no boffin mate but am sure planes can only reach suppersonic over water due to the boom that follows the plane ! thats why over land they stay sub sonic !! or so im led to believe

The air through which the aircraft is travelling doesn't know if it is over land or over the sea. Supersonic flight is sometimes used in combat operations to scare the sh*t out of the enemy without having to drop ordanance - it is called a show of force and having a jet such as a B-1 do a supersonic run over the top of some rowdy locals does do something to quell them Supersonic passes used to be allowed at airshows until the mid-70's (I think).

| Thats the reason why concorde use to go sonic over the bristol channel as well so im led to believe. I could be wrong i just stick to helicopters far more interesting. |
