Reclaiming bank charges

A neighbour of mine just got a grand refund after doing this:

Bank charges: Reclaim them, they're unlawful, so you can get six years money back | MoneySavingExpert: Consumer Revenge, Credit Cards, Shopping, Bank Charges, Cheap Flights and more,

Anyone the YD massive knows done it?

Well the account is stil open, but I don't really use it very much.

I have not had any hassle from them, but when they tried to take a loan payment a day early before I had put money in to cover it they tried to apply a charge, so I phoned them up and they admitted fault and refunded it straight away.

I have read that once you go through the procedure and they do refund the charges then there is some knd of flag against your account so that charges are refunded or something - I am not 100% certain on it, but it's what I have heard.

I think Allience & Leicester said they will close the account of anyone who tries to get the charges refunded. You can still claim on closed accounts though.

In my case it got to court level, when I made a claim against them. It is handy if this happens as you can add 8% interest from the day the charge was took from your account, 6 years max, so they ended up paying me alot more than I was originally claiming - especially as al my charges were from 5-6 years ago!

Give it a go - you can't loose.

Me too. HSBC, no hassle - they did however send me a "we are looking into it letter and will get back to you". I sent a letter explaining that since the first charge would become 6 years old in a couple of weeks, I had no time for them to look into, they wrote back within a couple of days saying they would like to refund me. No mention of closing account, but I do have a mortgage with them, so i cannot see they would want to.
