| The Big Brother Car Tracking thing. This has been descussed on YD already and, tbh, I can't remember if I signed the petition or not. Anyway, the belo is self explanatory. Follow the link at the end and sign the petition ....... or don't ............. > > > > >Whether you drive a car or not, please read - > >Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2. >Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the >'Pay As You Go' road tax. > >The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody >about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had >signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the government to at >least take any notice. > >Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, >just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a >link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition. > >The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to >purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use >it. >The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, >the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery >driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school >paid £86 in one month. > >On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will >know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been >going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can >probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill. > >If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the >constant >bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website >(link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. Sign up if >you >value your freedom and democratic rights - > > > >http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax > >

| only problem is this is a load of b*ll*x There is a petition. It's an official No. 10 website However, anyone can put a petition on there about anything (well, almost) - and just because there's a petition against it doesn't mean anyone is (a) actually doing whatever it is the petition is against, or (b) going to change even if they were. As far as I understand it, there are no proposals yet along the lines mentioned in the petition - but it hasn't stopped 934,015 people signing up so far!! (Probably more now!)

| Could anyone actually find this 'BBC Study' that everyone refers to - no clue about it on the BBC website when you search for 'road pricing' (BBC - Search results for road pricing) and curiosuly they don't even mention their own alleged study in their report on this petition (BBC NEWS | UK | Road charge petition tops 230,000) But heck, why cloud the hysteria with some facts eh? |

Well, I can't find anything about this BBC survey thing either. I suspect that the non working mother also drove to her neighbours for coffee every morning,a nd to Sainsbury's three times a week, round to her mothers, etc. etc. In a week where I go practically nowhere, I can still rack up 100 miles! I'm not entirely certain but I'm sure THEY could find our where I live without the aid of this petition. Worth it or not? I don't care. I am totally opposed to anything like this and I don't care who knows. I don't care if it is all lobbocks as I will sign it just in case.

The idea that not putting your full address somehow protects you from something is laughable though, when it is easily obtained form a house number and post code.

In addition to no longer worrying about quoting my address I am correspondingly starting to acquire password paranoia ......... a) In case someone finds out what they are. b) There are so many to remember. I am also beginning to get 'telephone security check rage'. It's at the point now that I would rather correspond in writing than phone up. Of course this rage is exacerbated by phone menu options.
