Angry Speed traps ?

Saw something I`ve not seen before this morning. Police had set up traps of some sort on a M56 flyover. Now this wasnt the usual van with camera in it or man with radar gun, it was 2 remote "things mounted on tripods that looked like they had some sort of mirror on them - or hood of some sort" (one above inside lane and one above middle lane) mounted on tripods and not manned (but bobbies and van were close by)

Is this a new type of speed trap ??

Yep - I was doing 80 and generally spot them so will take me punishment (if its a speed trap)

you may just get away with that, allowing for speedo error and the speed that they let you get away with. which i believe is 10% ( but don't quote me on that )

It's more likely to be ANPR.

Think they may well be, they were on a bridge over the M40 (near Beaconsfield) just after Christmas, round about the time everyone was going back to work/school etc
I was just on the speed limit I think!

They have those arround here sometimes, I think they are more to do with car tax evasion, so I think you'll be lucky.

Yep. They're most commonly used by the DVLA looking for untaxed / uninsured / unlicensed cars, but if it was the police I think they may also use something similar to identify stolen cars etc.

And if it was a speed camera, I think you'd be very unlucky to get done for doing 80mph on a motorway anyway.

Sounds like Automatic number plate recognition, so as long as you are legal you should be OK. Theya re looking for stolen, untaxed, uninsured, no mOT rather than speed.

If they had wanted to talk you would have had a tug up the road

Angry

Got done coming back from Capernwray a fortnight back, thought the van looked dodgy so slowed down quickly. BSTARD still got me at 98 oops. Now before you say speed kills and all that, I subscribe to the modern car theorm, better brakes, anti skid etc and it was aclear M6 on a remarkiblly nice Sunday! Its high time the government clammped down on 20mph in built up areas around schools and old foggies homes and left those on motorways alone for a while!

ANPR is quite common around here with long stretches of A-road without junctions. Usually a police car at either end and a flatbed truck for towing.

Usually out getting no insurance, wanted vehicles, no tax etc. All good.
(Unlike speed cameras which should all be destroyed and the operators sent to live in siberia).

During the early days here they put signs up hand written saying "This is NOT a speed trap". Mainly due to word getting round and everyone avoiding the road thinking it was a speed camera and the usual panic breaking from someone coming round a bend seeing a camera and crashing.

I agree with String....

Oh..and your allowed 10% plus 2 mph. and thats from the top police dog on the news yesterday.....again trying to justify more speed cameras.
