Are there any Opticians on the boards? I need some clarification (no pun intended).

Good morning?

If you are reading this and anoptician could you please help clarify something for me?

I've had my eyes tested at work, I use a lot of CAD in my daily duties, and have had the following prescription:

Right eye.
Sphere 0.2v (maybe r?) with a line above
Cyl 0.2v (maybe r?) with a line above
Axis 100

Left eye.
Sphere 0.25 (maybe r?) with a line above
Cyl 0.25 (maybe r?) with a line above
Axis 80

These are on the line labelled dist.

The question I have is, when the optician told me I needed them for working on the computer and reading, why would I have distance glasses? They do seem to have a big impact on my distance vision (not surprisingly) but are they to be left on all the time?

Thanks in advance,

Noel.

I'm not an optometrist and no doubt one will be along soon with more detail. This is a prescription to correct presbyopia - one to correct myopia would have negative lens strengths. The prescription form usually has two sets of boxes to allow for correction at each end of the visual range with bifocal glasses, so it looks like your prescription has been written in the wrong boxes. The optician who makes up your glasses will know what is meant and will send you back to the optometrist if it's not clear.

Noel.
No. They are to correct near vision and are likely to adversely affect your distance vision. It's more usual for myopics like me (-3.5 in each eye) to wear their glasses all the time because even close work is far vision for us. Usual disclaimer: ask your optometrist (and anything that gives you a headache is probably bad).

[Edit: missed the second question]
