| As there is other stuff on the NHS... Thought this was a good story to get a debate going ..... A mother-of-four who weighs 42 stones claims she is being left to die because the NHS will not pay to treat her obesity. Let me get this right she was happy to go into a £5000 a week clinic on NHS money yet when the money was withdrawn she complains again? Her local health authority (who I assume are part of the NHS, please correct me if I am wrong) have offered her a place in a psychiatric unit to get help but she refuses this and prefers to blame the hard working people of the NHS who have really sick people to deal with. If her husband loves her as much as he says he would leave the woman at the door of the psychiatric unit. In my opinion people like this lady shouldnt get a penny from the NHS, her claim that she was suffering from post-natal depression and was offered no help sadly cuts no ice with me. There IS help out there, its just a case of having to find it for yourself. For example a visit to the Doctors would have put this lady in touch with support groups, An internet search would have come up with lots of helpful advice I could go on but I wont. Instead its better to complain about the NHS spending £60,000 on your treatment and when they ask you to support yourself by going into secure care claim they are leaving you to die. Taken from Yahoo news: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/07032007/39...2st-die-0.html Sharon Mevsimler has been confined 24-hours a day for the past 18 months to one room at her Chelmsford, Essex, house where her husband, Bulent, has given up work as a chef to look after her. The 37-year-old began comfort eating after suffering from post-natal depression. Her weight ballooned and she has now been told she cannot undergo surgery until she loses at least 12 stones. Mrs Mevsimler has been warned that she could have just months to live unless she takes drastic action as her weight is severely impacting on her heart, and she now requires oxygen to help her breathe. Four years ago, the NHS paid for her to stay in the exclusive £5000-a-week Priory clinic for three months and she went from 35 stones to 28 stones. However, Mrs Mevsimler claims the weight piled back on after the funding was withdrawn. She has since refused her local health authority's offer of a psychiatric unit to help her lose weight. She said: "I suffered from postnatal depression and I never got any help or support with it," adding that she has not had any support from her GP or the NHS. Mr Mevsimler has denied being 'a feeder', someone who deliberately supplies a loved one with an abundant supply of food in order to gain weight. Although his wife admits to snacking and comfort eating every day as well as a love of takeaways, he said: "I love my wife and I want her to get better and from the NHS, I'd like her to get provisional help, and for her to get better as soon as possible."

| £ 5000 a week ,,,, surely, thats way over the top ,,,, I to would love to pay for my own treatment or have a medical insurance scheme like in the states. I'm public sector NOW again as well, YEP. I'm not paid for sitting on my arse all day , but love my job , and I knew what wages I was getting when I signed up.... So, can fully understand where monies should be spent.

| I don't really know or even can think of a answer ....... But something should be looked into to save a high amount of money spent on cases like this.... Fully understand that the lady has a problem , but feel that someone is ripping off someone for a hugh amount of money ,,,,

| Bugger, already replied once but lousy connection here munched it. The US has a much maligned Medicare(sp?) system, we could look at introducing something on those lines. A wide variety of ailments/procedures conducted would simply not be offered free, essentially all the non life threatening stuff I imagine. A lot of people work very hard to provide for their families and would arrange for private care, this country today has a vast number of people who do sod all to earn any money and expect others to pay for it, I for one am sick of subsidising parasites and would like to see an end to it. The money people save in NI could be used to pay for private care, much like in many other countries. I appreciate this is not the popular view and I don't expect the situation to change, this is one of the reasons I am very keen to get out of the UK again, I believe in self sufficiency with as little Government intervention in my life as possible YMMV. | I wondered how long it would be before this story hit the YD headlines. Woman lies in bed, she can't get to the fridge, let alone the supermarket. Her husband feeds her fast food, takeaways and snacks all day. Neither are employed. She wants the NHS to care for her around the clock. I can't even discuss this without being cross. She has been offered help, she has had help. Her husband continues to feed her shite. It doesn't take a genius to work out that the husband needs removing.

| If the husband had done it to an animal he would have been up on charges. This must be abuse. The rest of Europe has a differing funding system than the nhs, manages to spend significantly more yet manage to offer care for both those that can pay and those that can't. Free at the point of care has not been the case in the nhs for years. About time the government stopped pretending. J

| The rest of (western) Europe pays significantly more tax than we do. Hence they have a better health service. In the US they have fantastic health services - but only if you can pay for it. Tens of millions of people cannot afford it. What happens to the people who can't afford it? They die young. In pain. I wonder how many hospitals & doctors could be bought for the cost of ID cards (£20 billion), some new nuclear subs (£10 billion), and the Olympics (£10 billion and rising fast)?
