| Went for a drive out today and noticed a strange 'rattle' on the car (Diesel 1999 Volvo V70) had a quick 'shufty' under the bonnet and couldn't find anything amiss. Car runs sweet as a nut (apart from the rattle) for the next 60 miles.Parks up, does a short dive to test out the new drysuit (cracking the suit - not the dive, viz was a grand total of 1/2m strange rattle still there though. Turns on the heaters cos it's still a bit chilly, and the car dies! 2 hrs later and the AA guy cheerfully informs me that the drive belt for the fuel pump has snapped and the strange rattle was probably the tensioner disintegrating!! He can't tow me home because he doesn't have the capability (car is an automatic) and it'll be another 2hrs before a recovery motor can get to me So, I finally get taken home after getting my car dropped off at my local garage, and now I'm rather worried about the obviously massive bill that going to be coming my way ![]() Anyone had the same problem and any ideas as to what it's gonna cost me? I think I may be selling my bum for a while to pay for this one!

| Volvo....gonna be expensive I think.... |

| Na....going to be OK. If it is only the fuel pump drive belt and tensioner then new parts can't be that expensive. A tensioner is only a bearing on a bracket and the belt is probably the usual rubber v belt. When it breaks you get no fuel injected into the engine so it stops. No damage to pistons or valves like a timing belt breaking. Of course I could be completely wrong.......

| Well, the good news is that it's only going to cost me around £150-£200 to have it sorted. As always, with good news comes bad news It's also going to cost me around £400 to have the 80k service done 13k miles early because I was told that I should have the timing belt done at the same time. I'm not going to risk it by not having this service done as i actually think I've got away quite lightly on this one.To be fair to the garage, they have looked after me whenever I've had a problem that I couldn't fix in the past and they aint seen my car for a service for the last 40k miles cos I change the oil/filters/fluids myself more often than the recommended service intervals. So, my quest for a decent video system has just gone down the pan for a few weeks
