Stinky Boy Needs Plumbers Help!!

YD to the rescue please!

I have just come back from a week away to find my plumbing not quite working as advertised nor as it was before I wen away! This is central heating and not body plumbing

The problem I have is that when I turn the hot water on the radiators come on and no hot water is provided. If I turn the immersion on, the same thing happens and no hot water is available.

I live in an RAF Married Quarter and phoned up the 'Emergency Helpline' and they have classed the lack of hot water as an 'Urgent Matter' and they have 7 days to sort the problem out . I have explained the situation and they can provide a plumber and an electrician (more on that later) on Wednesday afternoon to sort the issue out.

I personally think the problem is the diverter valve and I have included a couple of pictures for the knowledgable out there.

The lady I spoke to said that they would also send out an electrician on Wednesday because the immersion wasn't working but AIUI, the Immersion water goes through the same diverter valve.

The switch on the side of the white box above won't move from H to M (which I presume is Mid) which makes me think it is b*ggered!

Any ideas what I can do to sort this problem out before I start (or continue some would say) to reak the place out

Thanks, and well aware that this is Easter Sunday and the weather is beautiful which means there shouldn't be anyone on YD!!

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

It does sound like the valve is sticking. We had a similar problem with ours and ultimately it needed replacing but we found a temporary solution was to tap the coupling under the valve with a hammer, or alternatively just give the plastic box a thump - this loosened up the valve and got it working again. We found it would continue to work fine as long as we didn't try to run hot water and central heating at the same time. Give it a go - might get you through until Wednesday.

Good morning Sir
The solution to your problem is simple, firstly have your batman draw you a bath by carrying the water from the mess, then while you soak after he's washed you throughly and makes you a large G&T to help you recover from the shock, then retire to the mess for a spot of larks tongue's on toast and quail's stuffed with caviar for lunch, finally while your batman goes down to the local village to speak to a local tradesman, you can wile away the afternoon with a spot of peasant shooting.

I'm sure you can for an emergency you can call out a local cowboy and then claim the money back through work services, but don't quote me on that.

Failing that twatting it with a hammer might work

Thanks Dave but Howard is away diving today

I was sure there was something about beng able to call in the cowboys (local tradesman) and claim it back. I am off diving tomorrow in Weymouth so I won't be waiting in for someone then. Fortunately the gym is across the road on camp so at least I can use the showers there I know, me, use a gym, whatever next

The hammer will be coming out later, what else can I do to make it worse.

Regards

Most motorised valves have removable heads. If the motor is siezed take the head off and operate the valve manually. If the valve wont turn you need to get a bigger hammer.

is this RAF married quarters? Surely you can just move into the nearest 5 star hotel untill the problem is sorted out, or is that just for when you are on exercises.

Im sure you can call out a local plumber and claim it back from defense housing.

Looks like the twatting worked! I now have the diverter valve stuck in HW which is fine as long as the temp doesn't drop like 'Day After Tomorrow'.

Thanks for all the help. Greens incoming!
