All part of the propaganda war. The MOD obviously thinks that what they will say will be useful to the "effort", which begs the question: what will happen the next time something like this happens and the MOD don't want the story told? Rather short sighted I think, and unedifying.

Another thought occurs: given the obvious fact that this IS propaganda, and that there are obvious downsides to allowing soldiers to talk to newspapers, it's interesting that the MOD seem to feel that the public are more likely to believe the tabloids, than they would anything said by a MOD flack.

Strange world.

If everyone can cast their mind's back to Gulf War 1 (a new hope) when the two RAF pilots were shot down and after being slapped about were paraded on TV saying the war was wrong. Now as they released a book retelling their story no one complained then so why now?

I don't remember seeing them high-fiving each other for the Iraqi TV cameras and grinning from ear to ear as they rifled through bags full of tat. It was clear for all the world to see that they'd been badly beaten up.

I heard the senior officer on the radio this morning saying that selling the stories to the press was bad form - good for him.
