I did a dive on a single yesterday. It was lovely and the kit was wonderfully light.

(I did use Apeks regs and a wing though - sorry!)

Belittling new divers is not on at all. Passing on experience is great. YD can be caught out doing both, but generally it all ends up balanced in the end, and you can get access to a wide range of knowledge and experience. Don't shut newbies away!

Come on, Mark, many of us who are members of this forum are also active on Divernet. With 1600 dives, all over the world, I don't consider myself a newbie .
I like this forum but I also like Divernet. There's a lot of interesting discussion there too if you take the trouble to look for it. There's also a lot of rubbish, of course, but no more than on YD. I sometimes wonder whether I've inadvertantly logged onto a kindergarten site when I read some of the threads here.

and what makes you think it was only on the court?

So you have a closed forum and a newbie asks what they describe as a 'silly question'. For example "When I was on holiday, a dive guide took me to 40m for 20 minutes and we didn't do any stops. Surely that's wrong?" If the only people allowed on are beginers, then what's the point of getting advice from them? Also, when would they be forced to resign, after 100 dives? After 200?

Aggression towards new divers is bad manners and counter-productive. From what I've seen such behaviour doesn't last long before a banning takes place.

Cheers, Chris

PS That question was asked of me by a couple who were PADI o/w with very few dives and a too trusting nature. The incident really happened and yes, they did get bent. Fortunately no long term problems resulted. Subsequently they have become very active divers and know a lot more about N2 absorption!

I joined YD with just under 100 dives, having been qualified for nearly four years...but I was still an incredibly naive and novice diver. The diving I had done for the first few years was sporadic and mainly abroad. At the time I joined I had only just started to take my UK diving - and my responsibilites to myself and others as a diver - seriously.

YD opened up a whole new world of contacts and experience for me - not to mention having made friends who I now regard as my dearest mates . The more I dived with a whole range of different people, in different situations, with varying levels of experience and a whole array of kit configurations, the more I began to question the type of diving I want to do in future and how safe I actually am in the water.

I've progressed in leaps and bounds over the last 18 months or so - is that so bad? However, I never felt pressurised on here to progress. Agreed that without YD I might not have ended up as a twinset diving semi-tekkie black-clad diver , but perhaps that's only because the options and opportunities to make those informed decisions wouldn't otherwise have been available to me.

Can I also say I found the environment I dived in pre-YD to be far more patronising - dare I say bullying - than I have ever found on here.

Just guessing but do you think this might have anything to do with new divers buying 'mainstream' dive mags - such as Diver etc - when they first take up the sport, and through this logging on to Divernet to ask their 'newbie' questions?

I remember the kit-envy I felt with every new marketing push in the magazine adverts, and how I read Diver, Dive and SportDiver from cover to cover every month when I first started diving.
