| Well in my experience they are a very useful instructional tool, especially at open water level. Can write backup tables in there etc etc, so if they have never used a slate then they might not have a use for them. |

| Digger once broke my kit underwater whilst I was wearing it. I quickly jotted a combination of; a note to my loved ones, my will, and a message for the police. Juz

| I've had Garf come up to Wilbo, Rob and I while on the JEL and write, 'I seem to have misplaced my buddy, can I join you lot?'. This was before I knew him, and I wish we had said no then!!

| Required - No, but i have found them very useful on a number of occasions. Standard scuba hand signals are great for conveying the very basic but if you need to communicate anything complex or non standard then wetnotes are hard to beat. I have often thought about learning sign language to facilitate u/w communication but i have yet to meet another diver who knows any so i guess that i would most likely just recieve the standard u/w signal.. a shrug

| Seriously though. They are not hugely expensive (Accessories - BSAC £8 from BSAC), they do not take up any real space and yet one day could be useful, so why not carry them. It's like saying that in 800 dives I've never needed my octopus - that may be true, but I'd still carry it. Juz

| I tend to use them more on land for underwater use. So when I was last fixing moorings I made a sketch on land, which I used underwater. I need to find some decent pencils though. Janos
