any plumbers / heating enineers on the board today? Quick Question

Hi All

Hoping someone on the YD boards may be able to advise.

We are having some building work done at the moment, converting a garage to an extra room. The garage was the location for the central heating boiler, so it'll now be indoors (in a cabinet, of course, rather than as a feature of the room). Anyway, I'm quite keen to have a thermostat in the hall that controls the heating - we had one in our last house, when the thermostat was activated the heating would come one, when it was set low, the heating (even though the timer was in the "on" position, wouldn't come on. Quite simple really.

Before anyone says "thermostatic valves on radiators", I don't want more of them, as they mean that the heating boiler is on and pumping hot water, whereas a thermostat allows the heating to not come on at all if not required.

Anyway, with the bulding work continuing apace, I have an opportunty to run some cable from the boiler to the location for the thermostat, but as the plumber doesn't come in until the end of the work, and running cable after the walls are finished would be a pain, I'd like to run the cable first.

Is there any specific type of cable required for the thermostat? I assume it doesn't carry much of a current, but happy to be proved wrong.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Andy

Can't directly answer the question but I think standard lighting cable would do. You say are changeing the garage to a living area and having the boiler now enclosed. Wacth out for ventilation especially as you are talking of enclosingthe boiler, get it checked out as you may need more air bricks installed and its best to get them done before the final plastering skim.

Thanks all for the info - greens on their way. Wireless looks like the way to go, I think!

Regards ventilation, I did have a minor panic moment about that, but I checked the boiler installation guide, even though it was in the garage it is a "room sealed" unit - all ventilation is done through the flue. Thanks for the reminder though.

You should't need extra ventialtion if the boiler has a turbo flu, and I think most do these days, but as Coilin say's ask the question before it's too late.

Edit: posted at the same time, you already knew abot the flu
