I've done this both ways, i.e. climbed up to the cable car station and taken the cable car, also skiied down again. it's a fantastic view from up there on a good day and well worth the trip, and if there is enough snow the ski route down through the Valle Blanche is well worth it, (probably far to early for you) and you must take a guide. The cable car is fast, and even with the change over at the halfway point the change in altitude can still leave you light headed. Enjoy it.

Also the cable car up the |Grands Montets above Argentiere.
The view up the Argentiere Glacier and of the Dru is awesome.
