can someone point me in the direction of a free or cheap solution for converting avi and mpg files into mp4 and resizing them at the same time. I have a few movies I want to get onto the ipod

You might enjoy ffmpeg as well Garf - lots of parameters and options to play with to tweak the encoding to your hearts content. Some downloads here.
