Question Dogs disgusting habits - WHY?

Um, excuse the non diving post, but you lot will know cos you ARE the fonts of all knowledge.

WHY do dogs roll in fox/sheep poo? And no, it's not Rogan. It's Millie - the normal(ish) one! She doesn't do it with other doggie poo, just fox and sheep poo. Is there a way I can stop her from doing this without resorting to putting her on the lead. I walk her in the dark most days so can't keep an eye on her all the time - mainly cos I can't see her!!!!

Oh, and whilst we're on the subject, WHY do they eat rabbit poo? What's so tasty about rabbit dropping???

And another thing. Why do their farts smell sooooooooooo bad??? Mine eat Science Diet, which is supposed to stop this, but trust me, it doesn't!

When we lived in the bush, my dog (a Staffy) used to feast on the whole spectrum, possum poo, wallaby sh!t........and then one day, she did the big one; she booted our cat off his latrine, ate the moggy doos, came in the house and was then copiously sick. I got called up from work and was ordered to drive home (30kms) IMMEDIATELY to clean it up.

Well I would green you for that but I've just greened ya for your smutty thoughts in the KBW thread!

So basically there's nowt I can do?!? Stop when they mature. She's just turned 7! Oh well, bath every day then! She knows I don't like it cos she looks at me all soppy eyed! I've never shouted at her (Rogan, yes, but not Millie!!) but she knows I don't like it!

Oh well, perhaps if I just rub it off with a kitchen towel the smell will linger around her and she'll not need to do it again??? (though I'll bath her for you coming tomorrow!!!)

That's started a major coughing attack! Laughing so much!

Me thinks Moo needs to publish that story! Though you wouldn't be able to see her angelic face as she tells the tale in writing! As if butter wouldn't melt!!!

Talking

Dogs roll in this sort of stuff to mask scent and take on scent, much as we wash to get clean and put deo on etc., sadly to us the stuff they roll in can be gut churning and completely revolting. To the mutts however, its Roses!!
Our bitch rolled in the remains of a dead fox once and stank for 4 days before we could get rid of the smell. There are a number of obedience training tips you can adapt to train your pets that what they want to do regards rolling is bad

Bath pets only a maximum of 3 times a year, otherwise you can affect their natural oils that keep their coats in condition.

Eating rabbit crap is completely harmless, afterall, its only grass/greens, but at our old dog club they used to say that it was because the dog may have a protein defficiency!! Where I used to walk our dogs was a series of large fields and fullof rabbits, it was like a smorgasboard to our bitch and she did nothing for the first 15 minutes but eat rabbit crap. I nicknamed her Dyson!!!

For food we feed our 2 dogs a complete herbalistic food called Autarky, it has all the goodness they could ever require and they are the picture of health. Cost is about £17/£18 for 15kilo's and its vat free. Get the adult maintenance one though, although they do a senior and puppy mix too.

As for farts - if they smell less rancid than mine I don't care.

Correct. By masking its scent the animal can hunt better. Dogs eat anything (including shit) as a survival mechanism. If it pukes it up it will eat it again.

They are disgusting animals.

We domesticated dogs to help us with hunting and animal husbandry. They are very very good at this role. Only modern humans with their childish anthropomorphism think of dogs as "pets". Such folk then cannot understand why the dog doesn't behave like a child as opposed to the tame wolf it actually is. Dogs do not "love" you they associate you with food. As a pack animal it wants to be pack leader and if given the chance it will dominate its pack members - the humans. Observation of many a dog owner shows that the human is in fact the subservient pack member. How very sad and inadequate these people are...
