'Blundering Michael Jackson accepted a birthday cake from Britney Spears - and thought he was getting an award for "Artist of the Millennium".
The bizarre star even gave an emotional acceptance speech to millions of TV viewers - even though no such award exists.
Confusion arose when Britney Spears introduced Jackson on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York and presented him with a cake to celebrate his 44th birthday.
The Pop Princess said that, for her, Jackson was the artist of the millennium.
But Jackson took her words to mean he was being honoured as the greatest singer of the last 1,000 years.
The star then told the audience and millions of TV viewers: "When I was a little boy growing up in Indiana if someone told me I'd be getting the Artist of the Millennium award, I'd never have believed it."
He went on to thank God, his parents and the magician David Blaine.
MTV later said it was a all "a bit of a misunderstanding".
"There is no such award as the Artist of the Millennium. I think some wires got crossed," said a spokeswoman for the network.
To complete his embarrassment, Jackson was ridiculed by the show's host, American comedian Jimmy Fallon.
He said as Jackson left the stage: "Michael Jackson looks great for 44. Between you and me, I think he's had some work done." ' |
