Any Experience Of Hog Roast??

does any one on here have any experience of a home done hog roast, just wondered if any one had been there before us, and how big there pig was cooking time and how much coal was used??

We have used logs, probably a cubic yard of logs. With charcole we used about 6 X large bags

Pig is usualy about 120lb

Open fire on a rotisary it takes about 12 hours to cook.

Enclosed in a corigated iron box you can get that down to 8

Using an open fire the outside gets prety black before the middle is cooked

A friend of mine had one last year.
He found a local supplier who starts the pig off early in the morning and brings it to you, with a propane powered spit. There was only an hours cooking left.
Perhaps there is someone similar in your area.
I think it cost around £100.

thanks for the replies we were thinking about 12 hours

we were just putting a plan in place as we think we may have source for a hog and just wondered how high above the coals it had to be yto cook properly, me and kev made plans for a rotator!

its not this weekend, its next weekend. this weekend is my mates night on friday

io am sure you put it in your diary but you were probably looking at the wrong week

we were just putting a plan in place as we think we may have sourced a hog and just wondered how high above the coals it had to be yto cook properly, kevs been around tonight and weve made plans for a rotator!

Pig is about 18" above the coals and you need to rake the coles out regularly to keep an even heat.

Get loads of thick foil to protect the bits that burn easy and loads of basting oil.

DONT use fire lighting fluid to get the charcole going as it makes the pig tast like oil.
