So 0.9 recurring and 9.9 recurring have the same 'number' of 9s after the decimal point.
So when you subtract, the recurring parts (after the decimal point) cancel each other out leaving the exact value of 9

The argument in the OP is precisely correct, and 0.9 recurring is really exactly equal to 1!

There is an algebraic proof based on geometric series ... a little light reading for a deco stop one day? )

Yuk! It would be enough for me to know for sure that the OP is indeed correct. Then I can just add it to the infinitely long list of things in the universe that I don't understand

Another view:

0.3 recurring is equal to the fraction 1/3
0.6 recurring is equal to the fraction 2/3
. . .
so 0.9 recurring is equal to the fraction 3/3, and 3/3 = 1

Kind of, but that's just another way of restating the original problem - i.e. does 0.33333 recurring really equal 1/3?

Yes, you are right, it does really re-state the original problem.
And yes, 0.3 recurring *is* equal to 1/3 - try using your original argument on it.
(Actually, any recurring decimal can be converted to a fraction using the same method). And that is quite enough brain work for tonight!

Nothing is finite. Nothing works perfectly in our universe because we are limited by our own perceptions.
Consider, how many days in a year? So what to we do ? We add em together to make a a full number to fit in our realm of understanding and bung in February once every 4 years

What you need is Doctor Who
