I have also gone through similar experience as your good self.

Maybe I think too hard sometimes but it is a satistical fact that you are far more likely to be injured or killed in an RTA on the way to or from a launch site than actually on the dive itself.

So if you are far less likely to cause injury or get injured or killed in your car whilst out on a dive.... then your life insurance should cost less just as the case where putting my wife on my car policy reduced he policy cost because it meant that as she was driving the car - I wouldn't be able to crash it!!!

I think it's a technical and legal money spinner for the insurance companies to charge you more money

Whilst out on your days diving you are far less likely to get injured in your car

At least solo diving is covered . . . that's stopped a few discussions

It's interesting because having just moved house I'm looking to amend my life insurance as my mortgage has changed. CIS (who provide my mortgage) came up with a silly figure for life insurance, based on the fact I'm a diver.

What's worse is that the questionnaire they asked was plainly ignorant to diving practices - I sent them a letter back explaining that certain divers do actually risk assess their diving habits and make sure they have least risk when diving. However, not only did they stuff up the sum insured, but the cost per month was mental for the sum shown

I've asked for a quote from Lifesearch, so here's hoping!

Mark.

We are with scottish widows for life insurance and accident, sickness and unemployment insurance.

I rang them in Nov to let them know the type of diving I now do had changed form Holiday diving a few times a year to diving 2-3 times a month in UK waters up to 40m on nitrox.

They did not load the premium at all and said they do not really consider it when assessing premiums. I even have the confirmation letter from them.

May be worth shopping around.

When Jules first enquired about this I rang every insurance company that I deal with and spoke to underwriters to get their views on diving. Now some were simply refusing cover, some loaded by silly amounts, but a couple were sensible. One even stated that if you enter the Stanegarth once they will treat you as a wreck diver and will apply the same loading as the nutcases who go poking around in fresh virgin wrecks.

One of the most sensible approaches was that they will load for deeper than normal recreational dicing, so the girl said to BSAC Sport or PADI AOW depths and as far as wrecks go, they would have no issue with the likes of Stanegarth or Thistlegorms, basically heavily dived wrecks are OK, but if you are "exploring" then they will load.

Unfortunately as Jules didn't get back to me, I think I've binned my notes, either way I'm not at work, but I can make some calls when I return to work next week if anyone is interested.

It was CIS who I got my quote from. And yes I too wrote back to them saying their questionaire was asking all the wrong questions and was ignorant of diving practices. Do you think they actually do anything about it?

I am still looking for reasonably priced cover for normal sport diving if you have any companies to recommend.

One of the questions asked was "where do you intend to dive" and this was for life insurance covering the next 15 years. Do you know where you are going on holiday next year , let alone the year after?

They may well ask that, not based on where you might go, but where you aim to go and I suspect it's not so much the venue as the type of diving. So do you intend to do most of your diving in clear tropical open water or do you aim to do ice diving or caving or becoming a wreck specialist etc.

Granted you may not know, but if you do have plans, then best to let them know rather than getting any claims turned down when you're dead

Will have a butchers on Weds for you
