| Neither Direct Line nor Legal and General have loaded my premiums for diving (though L&G wanted quite a lot of detail about the kind of diving done).

| This has come up before a number of times. If you take out insurance and then start diving, the Co's dont re-calculate your premiums, if however you subsequently take out new insurance they take diving into consideration when assessing the 'risk'. If you change the type of diving you do that also seems to have little or no effect on existing policies. so if you think you might change from a 15m holiday diver to a 100m rebreather diver doing caves, it might be an idea to get insured before you buy the Inspro. It's bad enough that I asked them to put the extra insurance in place when i took the extra money in august. And I only just found out that they didnt when my premiums didn't change and i queried it.

| Have they categorically stated that they have rated (increased) your premiums because of diving? When did you take out your original policy? If it was years ago and the premiums were guaranteed (ie wouldn't increase over the term) then it could also be your age that has bumped them up noticeable. Is it pure life cover or does it have critical illness included (that WILL bump the premiums up considerably as rates have gone up recently) Did they write to your GP for any information - if so, something they have disclosed might also account for the increase. If you are wondering about this then you can request a copy of the GP report. Diving is not seen as a risk for life assurance acturaries normally - Standard Life are normally on top of their game when it comes to taking a realistic view on their risk book.
