I do know of some kids who get £30 per month, but buy their own clothes.

It seems I was correct in thinking he's trying it on!

LOL, Paul
You're not wrong - I know the Aussie $ and the UKP don't exactly have parity but he's talking about an income level equivalent to about 8.5% of the pre-tax income from my primary employment. And I pay tax, medicare, mortgage, living costs out of that. (of course I send my wife out to work down t'pit too for a bit of extra)

Looks like they pay about 6 quid an hour down at Tescos - maybe he should go and talk to them - learn some useful life skills and the real value of money too.

Eldest child (11) was on a system of chores to earn up to £7 per month! (This was subsidised by her father to the same amount so effectively she could get £14 a month). But....some of her peers are on £20 a week.

For a 14 yr old I'd suggest a flat rate of about £5-£10 a week and if he wants more then he can do chores at a negotiated rate.

My pocket money stopped when I started diving.

As soon as I was able to earn, I was told I wasn't getting any more money for free. This then evolved into a series of interest free loans that I paid back over a series of months. Previous to that, I had a sliding scale based on how much I wanted to do to help around the house. So, if I didn't get off my arse, I got something stupid like 20p and it increased as I did more.

I had a mate who got £150 a month, but she didn't get ANY more after that, unless it was something a bit special, then she got help, like I describe above.

I suppose I get a form of 'pocket money' now, but that's just to make sure I still have some money left over to eat after I've bought gear and gone for a dive to 'test' it.

Anyways, need to keep the rate down, else they won't leave and get a job! Keep it under a quid a day and then they can go get a job. I was on 4 paper rounds at 14 to pay for breathing and to get 'the boys' off my back

I think your boy is taking the Picasso a bit. £45 a week is 9 ish hours work for me at the mo.

Bloody hell, I was halfway through my 3 year apprenticeship ( 1986 ) before I earned £45 per week, and now it's pocket money , , thanks you've made me feel really old

I confess, "I Don't Belieeeve it!"

So over to the masses, what is the GOING RATE for 14yo's, AND what does it cover??

PS I did offer to let him work as a chimney sweep.....

Thinking about it, if you're paying out £45 a week, thats a day on a boat you can't have, and after 15 weeks, that's a trip to the Red Sea you can't have........

See, gotta put these things in Perspective!

(Glad I'm far too young and immature to have kids!)

Sometimes it was the dogs lead, depending on which was the closet at hand!

As far as part time jobs went, as kids we'd do anything for extra money. I used to get 10 bob, or £50p if you're posh, plus I had 2 paper rounds and I'd still be expected to keep my room clean and tidy!
