your all making me feel guilty now

my 9 year old gets nothing as a matter of course,

but we have 2 pots of marbles our pot and his pot - as he does chores he receives marbles, feeds the dog a small one (5p), gets merits from school for good behaviour/homework large one or tidies his room (30p)

if however he doesn't feed the dog or his room is untidy on Monday Moringing then we do the chore and take back a marble

and at the end of the month we count the marbles and hand over the dosh

we worked on the assumption there is no free ride in life, you only get what you earn so the sooner he learns that the better for him.

Dave

feeling slightly guilty.

I confess to the drink. My dad climbs the walls when he thinks I'm spending his money on beer. He shouldn't worry, his cash goes on important things like diving

He then proceeds to ask me if I'm actually doing my degree or just taking advantage of cheap air and courses. Of course the answer is doing my degree..... apparently.

When I were a lad...I used to get 1$ Singapore a month, but only if no significant sins had been found out. They were always committed, but sometimes my dad never caught me

Later on when we returned to England, I used to get half a crown every Sunday for singing in the local church choir and 7/-6 for singing solo at a wedding if there was one.

Hard to believe I was a choirboy...

£45 per week is a p1ss-take

This is over twenty years ago, but I used to get £3.75 a week pocket money conditional on my cleaning and keeping tidy my own bedroom. In addition to this I also got my Family Allowance every month which IIRC was £27. Out of this I had to buy my bus pass (£10), all my clothes and my toiletries.

In addition, I often cooked, ironed, emptied household waste bins, walked the dog and did other chores. I was expected to do these as part of the family.

£45 a week sounds a lot.

I confess, "I Don't Belieeeve it!"

So over to the masses, what is the GOING RATE for 14yo's, AND what does it cover??

-Paul

PS I did offer to let him work as a chimney sweep.....

FMS Paul!!!

That's nearly as much as I 'earn'!

I think fellow-mi-lad has got it slightly wrong, and extracting the Michael somewhat!

At 14 I didn't have pocket money as I had a weekend job, so all parental contributions stopped

You get my vote for sending him up chimneys!

Very occasionally, points can be deducted for bad behaviour, but I doubt they lose more than 1 point each per month...

Andrew
that is the same system i have with Master Scubee. He gets an additional £5 if he washes the car, which decreases depending on the amount i have to help him.

Excpet mine works over a fortnight.

When I was 14, i was getting £4 a half term. Out of that i had to get everything I needed from washing powder to toiletries and sweets.

If I add up the amount I spend on my son in a month (including clothes) it doesn't add up to £180. If it did, i wouldn't be able to afford to go diving!

Foggy - you are being taken for a ride!

My son gets £139 per week. Out of that he has to pay £90 for accomodation. So he has nearly £50 a week for food, books, clothes etc.

But....he is 21 and at Naval College.

£45 a week for a 14 y.o. is a lot over the top.

Foggy, that kid of yours needs to go on a drug-rehabilitation course as he's clearly got a bit of a habit going that needs your funds to subsidise!

Either that or you need to get him onto a more cost-effective mobile tariff as that's more than I spend on my mobile in a year, and was always too tight to get hooked on drugs...

my folks got me a Saturday job once I reached about 15 and I had a car-washing round to supplement my pocket money before that.

Once I started earning regular income, they made a point of principle that I should contribute 1/3rd to the household budget to get into the habit of paying my way and learning that nothing in life comes free.

Obviously, once I started earning proper money, then I did the sums on whether board and lodging would cost more or less than the 1/3rd deductions....

if you don't set that in place now, he'll still be living at home when he's 34....
