I lived in Longton in 1992-3 then Shelton 93-4 (classy!!)

Spent ALOT of time in Minstrels - MTV, Stella and the best cheese plates in the world! When did it close down? I've not been in Stoke for along time (I drove through it last October on my way home from Bristol) - I keep meaning to head down again for a trip down memory lane. Lot of very happy memories from my time there which is surprising considering the amount of time I spent at Entropy & Golden

Australia, or the rest of it, even at the height of the Transportation Erta was a veritable paradise compared with that place.

I visited there last year. 5 & 1/2 hours drive from Hobart (there was no road back then) over jagged mountain ranges, cold deep fast rivers, endless temperate rain forest, with nothing edible; followed by 30 mins fast boat ride. Over there it rains for 320 days a year, the westerly wind/howling gale is pretty well ceaseless and the island itself takes less than 10 mins to walk round. After chopping all the trees down so they could keep an eye on the convicts, they had to build a huge wall running north-south to keep the wind at bay, otherwise it was simply uninhabitable. Then on top of that, there was the sodomy.

One of only two to escape from there to the "settled districts", across 100 miles of very challenging and then unexplored terrain, only made it out by eating his fellow escapees. A very scarey story, they started out with 4 or 5 and the ones who were weakest were killed & eaten first; the last two daren't fall asleep, the old B&W movie shows them sitting around the fire, with the only axe they escaped with, having not slept for a week, fighting off sleep. The one who nodded off first didn't get to wake up.

I don't reckon your latter-day hard nuts from Stoke would have lasted 5 mins.
