| I heard about this the other day and thought it was very extreme and not particularly positive for the islamic faith. Today I have heard the authorities have decided to charge her and she is in court in the next couple of days facing a possible flogging or inprisonment. I try to keep as liberal a view on these things as posible, but I realy struggle with something of this nature to find how this could be the right thing for them to do? I'm not aware of any malace or intent with this case and it seems to be a very inocent event gone way out of control in the name of religion. To me events like this do nothing for the islamic faith and if anything damage it's credability across the world. James

| Of course it wouldn't happen here would it ? Bear in mind (no pun intended) that some journalists and the proprietors of Gay News were fined and given suspended prison sentences for "blashphemous libel" in 1977. Although the Gay News thing was perhaps likely to cause offence, perhaps intended to do so, but to a Moslem I believe anything remotely hinting of idolatory is considered bad news and in their terms likely to be offensive however innocent it might seem to us. Islamic art for example rarely if ever shows animals or people in it because of this anti-idolatory business. For all I know, maybe a Teddy bear is on dodgy ground whatever he's called. For information, I'm neither gay, Moslem, nor Christian for that matter, but just think we can't be quite so smug as we like about Johnny Foreigner's quant ways. |

If you look at the history behind it, the use of Concentration Camps by the British in SA was a response to an insurgency where the Boers were living off the land and provisioned by their farmers. The disaster which then occurred can be more characterised as the usual cockups and incompetence by the army administration who lost interest in looking after the people they'd interned rather than an intent to commit some form of genocide. The concentration camps run by the British don't begin to compare with the deliberate intent and effect of those run by the Nazis, the Soviets, the North Koreans etc. The teddy bear called Mohamed thing is really the tip of the iceberg in Sudan; I find it somewhat ironic that this matter is getting more coverage in the British (and Australian) media than the systematic genocide that continues in Darfur under the direction of the Sudanese government......except it's not genocide, (according to the UN), so that's ok then, I guess.

| Some naive scouse bint gets locked up for a few days and then deported for not realising that naming a toy after a prophet might cause offence is far more important and deserving of our protest than everything else that happens in Sudan. Do nothing when Darfur gets massacred but it's the end of the world because a Brit is inconvenienced for a few days. Yet another easy target for English media neuroses.

| We have blasphemy laws in this country. We have legalised corporal punishment in this country - but only for children. It's stupid in other countries, and it's stupid in this country. Ignorance of the law is no defence in any country.

Innocent people are killed daily in parts of Sudan and it's lucky if it will make it to page 18 of a broadsheet and lucky if it makes it into a tabloid at all. Deport a Brit and it's an outrage that needs a herd of MP's to go on an emergency visit and the country rending their vestments asunder. Probably a lot of gnashing of teeth. What's she done? Spent a couple of nights in the clink? Got a free flight home? Despicable treatment. It's horrendous! Brown must resign! FFS, it's a non event that doesn't even merit more than a few lines. What next? Saturday's headline... BRITON BURNS TONGUE IN ITALIAN COFFEE DRINKING OUTRAGE
