I'll tell you what you need to do as the TPS system was good until India call centres started and have no problems with calling TPS numbers because they use an automated dialler, TPS filtering costs money that telephone marketing company's wont pay out for and the prosecution is minimal.

call BT and stop unknown numbers calling your number about £3 per month then get Barr number service so if anyone does call and it's a marketing call you can press a few buttons and add that number to the Barr list.

If things still get through get an answer machine and let that take the call, they will always hang up and if you do want to talk to then pick up the call just tell friends that you are screening calls

The TPS is a spineless setup with little power anymore, telemarketing also use 3 up and 3 down dailing so if they have a number 01234 123456 they will also call 123457,123458,123459 and 123455, 123454, 123453 so they can even get ex directory numbers in the marketing system

I agree with this, get an answering machine to screen calls, but also join TPS (seeing as it's free, but takes a month or so to 'kick in'). It seems to have worked for me; up until a couple months ago, I was plagued with silent calls, now they must have taken my number off the sucker list as don't get them anymore, well, just the odd one.

before you pay out any money for a device, talk to your telephony provider. It's better to go with a provider (BT, Small World, Wight Cable or Virgin Media) than a reseller ($ky or "talk talk") IMO.

The call blocker may be something as dumb as a CLI monitor that does not accept withheld CLI calls - this can be done for free by BT and Virgin Media.

If you speak to them, and ask how to deal with nuisance calls, they will offer some suggestions and help.

Edit to add:

Call Blocker is garbage. if you look in "how it works" it does this:

Alternatively you can record your own message. A variety of alternative messages are suggested in the user guide within the pack, or below is a selection of alternate messages for you to record onto your callblocker.
don't waste your money.

As a business I get my fair share but interestingly I probaly get more on my house phone.

This is what I do, depending on my mood:
  • Answer the phone - Ahh that is really interesting, hang on whilst I get my pen & paper. Leave the phone hanging whilst I go back doing whatever I did.
  • Answer the phone in Hungarian. English doesn't work as every Tom, Dick & Harry speaks the lingo here.
  • Tell them off for calling whilsdt I'm sleeping, I'm a nurse, doctor, foreman and work nightsifts... (rarely use this though)
  • If I'm bored let them chat and try to get them to explain everything, get them to repeat it and at the very end say that you are a guest of the house and can not make decisions.
  • Tell them to hurry up as you were oin the way to the bog and will crap in the pants.
I try not to be rude as normally people on other end are just doing their job. It is frustating though to receive calls on mobile phone especially when roaming. Now I even get nuisance text messages selling the latest crap.

Are you suggesting that people pay to stop these bloody nuisance calls?
Not bloody likely. I have TPS, and will continue to ask those who call me to 'hang on a moment while I get her'

TPS and MPS worked superbly here and for some relatives.

2-3 weeks after subscribing everything stopped - cant recall the last cold call telephone attempt.
