| World gone mad?? or fairness? Racial slur as man calls Welsh woman "English" - Yahoo! News UK Personally I think it's about time that something like this happened. People would have a similar sentence if it was "Pa*i Bitch", or "Indian Bitch" or "Jewish bitch" etc etc.... so why not if someone uses English, Welsh, Scottish etc etc??? There was no need for it at all. Most people take the pish out of others but when it's done with vitriol then it needs to be punished. The acid test will come when it is someone who is traditionally seen as being on the end of racism giving it out, will they also be punished in the same way? So personally I think this is fair but it has to be applied to all.

| Spot on RS3100. Remember Irish jokes about their so-called stupidity? The end of those was a true victory for fairness, and the same should apply to the other groups. Currently, it's still ok in the media to laugh at the Welsh, and as you say, it's a simple test of racism to replace the key word with "Jew", "black" etc. Equally, we'll have come a long way when previously derided groups are pulled up for this kind of behaviour too. Where I grew up being called "English" in the playground was seen as a gross insult leading to instant fisticuffs. What we're looking at is gross generalisation and sterotyping of people by their ethnicity, country of origin etc. Nigel, your example of your Afrikaner friend is interesting, since the Afrikaners were so closely linked politically to Apartheid in the past. There were obviously anti-apartheid Afrikaners though. I'm ignorant of any other racial stereotyping of them other than as good rugby players! |
