Land Rover Freelanders

I need a car for a couple of months until the new company pickup gets delivered -- OK, I've run the current one wayyyyyy beyond the lease's mileage limit and it's cheaper to buy a car for a bit than use it any more. I need something with a reasonable load space and at least some form of 4wd and be decent on fuel.

I've never much liked the look of Freelanders but they are cheap and for a few months I could put up with one. What are they like mechanically? I've always heard they were a bit unreliable but they seem to get OK reviews. I'm looking at the 2L diesel.

Cheers,

Stuart

I've got a TD4 on a 53 plate, other than an issue with brake discs in the past, I have had no problems. 30-35 to the gallon, 4WD is ok, just don't expect to do any major off roading.
Load space is ok but not massive.
Early freelander were an f in nightmare but mainly the old rover engines
Hope this helps

I had a couple of the older ones before switching to Discovery's. The 2 litre diesel you've mentioned is the best bet. 1.8 petrol, woefully under powered. 2.5 V8 drank fuel like it was a thirsty night out! You'll get bored of it after a while, but for a couple of months or so you could do worse.

What are they like for space? I've just had a nosey round one and it looks very pokey, bit of a reverse tardis effect. Doesn't look much bigger than an Astra or something like that on the inside. The boot looks like it won't fit much without folding the seats down.

Cheers,

Stuart

I was very much into Land Rovers a few years back (Chairman of a club, produced news letter, built my own hybreed V8 etc etc). Now where I love the free Lander and Range Rover I have a problem with the FreeLander. I got my Ex one when they first came out and found I couldn't drive more than 60 miles in it before I had to get out coz my back was killing me.

I got DD one in 2002 and found that they were still the same. I would surgest you have a long test drive in one first.

Oh, you noticed ... without dropping the seats, it used to frustrate the hell out of me... get a trailer!
