Just how big is this welder then?

A few years ago my then landlord built a block of flats (sorry, luxury apartments I mean) and wanted to have them all electrically heated. He changed his mind when Manweb told him he'd be paying for a new substation. Gas boilers were cheaper.

And the demise of this substation was a bit more spectacular.

This is an 11000v cable joint under fault conditions, they do go like this in the ground and when they do you can feel them through a good 2 feet of earth.

Ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) is an insulation used for high voltage cables. It has improved thermal characteristics over more traditional cables, such as cross-linked polyethylene, enabling a smaller cross sectional area for the same load carrying capacity.

3 single core cables, 1 per phase, rated to 11Kv.

the fuse is only to cover the meter tails!!! through to the dis board yes??

and the usual service cable is 25mm not 35mm 35isusually only used as a looped service i.e. 2 houses!!
and we are only talking modern houses older ones may only have a 30amp fuse-start your welder oh bugger the lights have gone out!!

and this
as for the streetlights- its live at the bottom all the time and connected directly to the distributor cable from the area sub usually backed up by a 1000A ACB guaranteed to be big enough to weld from
is all load of s@@@

really so all of the subs that I have ever had the displeasure of changing ACBs in when the 60s crap finally fails are a figment of my imagination. and all the service to lampposts that i have had to do in the freezing depths of winter where I have been jointing onto the dis cable and then connecting the new supply for the new housesd is also a figment of my imagination.

on a new PME service the incoming service is a 35mm concentric.

yes old paper leads are a lot smaller and boy were they a bitch to joint in the winter most of the older 35A etc cut outs were replaced under the 70s-80s rectification programme, you find the odd 1 or 2 steel cut outs with a rewireable fuse in occasionally- I have one in the house, just waiting for edf to get their act together and come and change it as the pitch is starting to ooze out the bottom, not because I have a huge load but because the terminals are crap and you can't get the feckers properly tightened.

and having felt a 11Kv cable explode for real i can confirm sparky is right that you get a good thud when its under ground.

when you spike a exposed cable to confirm its actually dead before you cut into it and the Senior authorised person hasn't switched out the correct leg of the 11Kv ring you do get a rather large bang- that is a brown kecks moment.

Say what ????????

Steve,,
Obviously they know not that you is SAP ????
Perhaps you ought to post some pics of the subs that suffered catastrophics during the floods in Donny/Sheffield that your good self had to sort out,,
But then again ,,maybe not ..
This thread has been well and truly high-jacked by them tecky trician types,,,
The poor bloke only asked about his welder.....
