Buying stuff from the States

Hi ya all,
If I buy some second hand gear from a private person in the USA will I have to pay import duty/VAT etc?

Has anyone had experience with this?

I think you do.

Its also dependant on the value.......

Get them to send it with a low marked value on the shipping papers, that way you only pay tax / duty on that amount, Not the amount you actually paid!! if you see what I mean.

The problem is.....Do you want the shipment insured?? if so you have to declare its value

the other thing you have to watch is who you use to ship it as using certain carriers carries a 20 quid handling fee.....

get it marked as a gift and you should be ok, particularly at this time of year.

To avoid duties it needs to be under £36 if it is a present and under £18 if not.

Alternatively if they mark it as as a "return from repair" then that doesn't have any import duty either.

Not quite the whole story. Duty isn't payable if you have exported the goods first.

You still pay VAT on the value of the repair.

More than you wanted to know:
