You won't see someone if they are invisable.
But I know there are ways of seeing if you have the power

As for the Who's online page, it automaticly update's, just leave it open

It will highlight a stalker if you already have a good idea of the user name.

Or freind's that help

On Dac. I had spotted what was happening, but it was good to get it confirmed. The user had used a name that was, to say the least, no supprise to me!!!

But then it does help if you are expecting it

Which is very sad...................

I wonder if you see people who take the 'invisible' option though. Pretty sure your name does come up as online then

I have a 'buddy' list and sometimes pop into an online buddy's profile to see what they're viewing and whether I'm interested. Takes about 5 seconds but that was the only way I realised Dan had changed his profile pic
Really handy though as I rarely manage to keep up to speed with new threads and often find an interesting one this way.

I still don't really see how this highlights a stalker though and I find it hard enough to keep up with threads atm so will probably fail at monitoring that aswell

I have a question.

How on earth do you know that someone is cyber stalking you?

OK, I am not talking about the blindingly obvious stuff. Oh and to all those people I have sent multiple e-mails, PMs, letter, presents etc, I am not stalking you I just wanted you to know someone cares

Anyway, how do you know that it is happening?

I assume the trick with the "Who's online" and seeing which threads they are on helps if you suspect something, but how do you get from a happy participant on a forum to the "someone is watching me" stage? Is there some sort of secret methods of investigation, or am I just a being a bit naive here?

Yes, but for this you have to have an idea that something is happening, and by a particular person.

What I am saying is, "How do you even suspect something is happening?" I have know in the past of a 'stalker' if you want to call him that, who made a variety of obvious approaches to a lady, and were blatantly rebutted. So, when he kept on with the notes and presents, there was a problem.

But from reading one or two people here, it seems like it is all rather subtle, and the stalker is not 'showing his or her hand'.

Sorry, I just don't do subtle myself, so I can't quite understand it. And I must admit I have been caught out by people in the past. Not stalking, but in relationships in general where I didn't see any thing unusual, but it was obvious to others what was going on.

Agreed. But its still not easy. Luck had a lot to do with it.

The problem with this i you may NEVER know. But then does it matter if you don't get effected??

I agree, this is truely scary and the reason I have changed my view's on people hidding their identities. I could never understand why you would want to hide your name. But now I realise why.

Tell me about it

Thanks Paul

I guess some people are just weird - not like me who is perfectly normal

I suppose, as you say, if you don't know then it can't hurt (hopefully), but it just seems weird that something can be going on behind your back, that is about you and you don't know.

The scene from the modern Jekyll & Hyde comes to mind when James Nesbitt discovers that the organisation he was working for, only exists to monitor him!

The internet is a wonderful resource but alas its pure freedom will always be abused.

I have meet some really great people through this board and DAC, that outweigh's any downside IMHO. I had a wonderful letter today from someone I helped on here some years ago. We have'nt seen each other for over a year. But hopefully we will meet up again at the NEC next year
Does it matter that we hav'nt seen one another.......NO. we will always be freinds now. Thats what matters. Nothing else.

OMG - I didn't know you could do that view who's on line thing

I was quite embarassed when I came across my name and it said 'viewing who's online' .... only out of curiosity .... honest gov!

So, what's all that Yahoo/ Google Spider stuff about then

The other question I have is that I often log on in the early hours when I can't sleep and there seem to be 15 people signed in and another 80 guests who are these guests?

Anybody can view the threads. You do not have to be a member. These are guests.
