| I actually think it is one of the worst things one person can do to another. To bully in person ins bad enough, but on the web, over cyberspace, where they may not even know who it is is appalling. A few years ago, i set up a group - i can't remember now if it was an MSN or a Yahoo - but I guess it doesn't matter. One of the contributors was, quite frankly, off his trolley. He took offence to anything that anyone else posted, and went so far as to report another contributor to his employers, as he thought they guy was breaking some work regulation. It put the guys job at risk while they investigated. He hacked into peoples emails, made all sorts of threats to quite a few contributors. Several left the group as a direct result. As I was the group 'owner' (I can't remember the proper title now) I also became the subject of his attacks. He said (and i have no reason to think he was lying) that he knew where i lived, where my family lived and that if I didn't stop everyone posting what he deemed to be libellous comments, he would kill us all. It wouldn't have been hard to find us if he really wanted to, and i have to say, that given what i knew about him, I wouldn't have put it past him to move from cyber threats to in the flesh ones. It was a scary prospect, and I was not prepared to put anyone else at risk - particularly my son who was about 5 at the time. I became very wary of revealing my identity to anyone on the web, and even now, sometimes when my real name appears in a thread it rings alarm bells. i am sure there are worse cases than mine (I know of at least one which makes mine seem like nothing, but it isn't nice. As someone once said, and others frequently repeat - it ain't big and it ain't clever. It is nasty.

I have been on the receiving end of the unpleasantness Scubee mentions above and stalking by an ex (although the forum stalking turned out to be the least of my worries from him!) It is a violation and very damaging.I too am ever vigilant about my name appearing on the net and, coincidentally, have just PM'd someone asking them to change a reference to my real name in a post. Mal is always wonderful though and usually spots it before me and changes it I gather there are legal steps you can take but proving is difficult and the police will not/cannot invest the time and money
