Imported post We've already got congestion charges in Durham, it might seem like a bit of a ballache at times but even though I'm a car driver I'm in favour of it, especially as I might buy another bike this year

Imported post Damed fine idea this congestion charge thing. £5 is OK that should get most of the poor people off the road but I can't wait till its put up to £20.00 a day. I will be able to cruse about in my Roles Royce without the rabble getting in my way and I can carge it all to one of my companies so it will be tax deductable and wont cost me a penny. (Quote from rich toff) And to think they used to call him red Ken. What a laugh He is going to tax the poor people off the street. I wonder how many minimum wage people will have to quit their jobs as they cant get afford to take their cars into work and the crap public transport is too expensive and dosent even run when they need to get in to work. I am talking about the dishwasher at the resturant who finishes at 2.00 in the morning. As for the rest of us, I survey buildings all over London and fork out an average £8 a day in pay and display parking. However in central London I have often forked out £15 -20 a day parking. So why does he think a £5.00 is going to put any one (who can aford it or charge it )off? By the by my survey fees for central London go up £5. oo on the 17th. Mark Chase

Imported post I agree with it too - cars are turning us into a nation of over-weight lazy bastards (ie Americans) and the less of them on the roads the better.

Imported post Residents in LOndon have a 90% discount i.e. they PAY 10% plus a registration fee (£10 pa). Nice one Ken. Do other cities that have a CC system have 'free' solutions for residents. Gav mate sounds a bit NIMBY to me, you presumably drive your car to places and park? Matt (Edited by MATTBIN at 4:23 pm on Feb. 13, 2003)

Imported post Matt it is NIMBY I s'pose but when you can't park within half a mile of your house cos people who live less than two miles away wanna park outside my house when they work in central Edinburgh - use up all the spaces. Yes I have a car, when I use it for work it gets parked in a car park but 90% of the time I walk the 15 minutes to the station and then take the train. In Edinburgh the buses aren't too bad, they're clean, regular and fairly reliable but the roads are turning into a nightmare cos lazy f*ckers won't get get a bus or walk for ten minutes. I live in a nice residential area where kids walk to school in the main - remember doing that when we were kids - and this daily influx of cars is making the streets unsafe as motorists cruise round waiting to pounce on a parking space. A pox on them all.

| Imported post Where I live on a Saturday if you arent in the town/village centre by 10.30 - dont go cos all the 4x4's have swiped the parking spaces from the outlying villages that have no shops. I do understand honest, thats why I use a bike into London and at home wherever practical. Bit awkward though getting 2 x 12L filled! (not twinned). London tried to get round this by having 'residents only' parking bays (charged for obviously), people were found to be 'selling' their permits! Not sure what the answer is - maybe CC will work. | Imported post Your missing the point: The poor people who do the minimum wage stuff in the city dont live in the city they live in Streatham and Brixton they dont qualifie for the discount. Christ a 1 bed flat in London will cost you a 1/4 Million and thats a cheep one. |
