See... this is why getting drunk is such a waste of time. I bet you can't remember half of what you got up to last night, so that's 24 hours gone with nothing to show for it except an empty wallet.

I've been in IT for 11 years now and used to have the same problem. Then about 5 years ago I decided to setup my own registered company and do these "favours" as a side line. I charge people by the hour and can give VAT invoices for work, hardware and software.
After 4 years of this I had a look at my "business" bank account (keeping things seperate for tax purposes) and as I had never actually paid myself I gave myself a paycheck...which was just the right amount for my 2nd hand Inspiration!
After I've done my VAT return next week I'll have enough to do the work on my car I've been putting off.
Its all above board and the paperwork can be a biatch, but its worth it.
Once you tell people that you charge by the hour they will pay you or go elsewhere.

these days I just deny all knowledge and step away from the keyboard....

I get paid very nicely for spending my working week clearing out cr@p that users with admin rights have installed - I dont want to spend my freetime doing the same
