Damp garage- help!

So the garage where all the dive clobber is stored warms up during the day and goes cold at night. Just like a normal garage. What this means is water condenses out of the air onto the stuff in there and I've pulled out an old undersuit and it's got a few spots of mould on it. Yuk.

So.

Is it worth getting a dehumidifier for the garage to dry the air, or would it be a waste of electricity? Alternatively how about curtaining off a bit of the garage with poly sheeting (like those strips that you get in industrial buildings) and just dehumidifying that bit?

I have the same problem so I keep my undersuits in the house. Even if I dry things before putting them in the garage they still end up clammy and cold. What about storing things in plastic containers with well-fitting lids, with socks of kitty-litter to take the moisture out of the boxes? B&Q do decent storage boxes.

I have some industrial steel racking that holds the dive kit. I might sheet it and lob some kitty litter in. Might work a treat.

Instead of kitty litter, you can try wallpaper paste spread out onto trays lined with clingfilm - it works a treat and dries the air very well. The clingfilm helps you clear the soggy mess up and dump it.

Cheers, Chris

I wash me gear in a large barrel with Milton Fluid in it, that seems to keep mould and smell at bay if Im storing the gear for a few weeks, Id make sure the gear is near bone dry before storing it in the boxes and with the advice of kitty litter (hope the neighbours cat doesnt get in and leave me a parcel!) should be fine.

The kit always goes away bone dry- it's the warming up and cooling down that makes it damp again with the condensation. I'll try a few things hinted and let you know how I get on. I've yards and yards of plastic sheeting and steel rod so can make little plastic blinds for the shelves no problem.

The sheets might not stop all the moisture but worth a go.

I was thinking about trying some of those airtight plastic storage bags - the ones you can connect the hoover to and suck out all the air. I just haven't got round to it yet..

I found a really easy solution to this one, moved my kit into the spare room for the winter

Keeping dry

Can you hang kit up rather than store in boxes. My suits, regs etc all have hangers. The air circulates and no mold.
The air in sealed up boxes contains moisture and might still grow mold
