sparky,

Take her away somewhere *special* for her birthday - somewhere really special.. It doesn't have to be anywhere expensive - just somewhere that is special for the two of you.. Thats the 'present'. Then when you are ready you can propose to your GF in this special place. Take your time. Involve other people in the setup of your plan (of course swearing them to secrecy).

you only get to do this once. think about it and make it special for the both of you.

I hatched a plan and did the same.. it works..

I did think about that and time is not on my side i had booked to fly us to new york yesterday but due to the way work is at the moment i had to cancel it thank god i didn't tell her about it that was my original plan but now i'm going to wake her up on the morning of her birthday with breakfast and the ring or leave it on the dash of her car with a note not decided yet waking her up is going to be really hard as she's the lightest sleeper known to man so my alarm will wake her before me

I'd definitely support doing the asking permission thang. It certainly stands a chance of getting you some brownie points at least. If nothing else it isn't something that can get dragged up and complained about in future

I'd also be careful about cunning plans. Some friends of ours planned to get married abroad thinking nobody would join them and it would avoid some difficult situations - but everyone thought it was a great chance to combine a wedding with a holiday and they all went! (Actually it turned out ok and they had a great time!)
