| If you want the short answer then it is that Company C still own the copyright. This is beacuse copyright remains with the originator of the copyright (unless they created it as part of their normal course of employment, in which case it is their employer that would own it) unless there is a contract to the contrary which says something like "copyright will pass to the contracting party upon payment of invice" So as they were never paid for their work then they still own the copyright and can do with it whatever they wish.
