Top is turnip, bottom is swede...obviously.

We have had the North and South answers, so this is the Welsh answer

Ok, so here's another website!

eat the seasons | swede

eat the seasons | turnips

This is an argument that went on for 12 years in my house! (all tongue in cheek!) As a rule Southeners call the small one turnips and northeners call the larger on a turnip. So, the answer is BOTH are the turnip, depending on location.

HOWEVER, in supermarkets they are generally named the same way as Southerners call them. I used to work in Waitrose and worked on the Fruit and Veg section. Didn't stay long, but this was one of things frequently discussed!!!!

yep - it went on for a few years with my ex as well. I am, obviously, properly educating my son to ignore the softie southern labels in Sainsbury's and get the veg we want - what's in a name, anyway!

It actually becomes interesting if you are using a recipe book. If a recipe asked for Turnip, i would use the big orange one, regardless.

I don't ever remember eating the other one (unless it was mixed in with other things). Do they taste similar? Oh help... I have to go shopping tomorrow, so i will do an experiment

I didn't think you were old enough to have a son. Well, at least not one old enough to go shopping on his own.

Hugh! Jamie! Where are you? Turnips are orange and a bit knobbly. We used to make Hollow'een lanterns out of them. I never made a lantern out of a small purple swede...
