Indeed our Hallow'een lanterns were the same. I don't ever recall having a swede lantern though, it was always a turnip lantern and it was always orange. I rest my case

I wasn't implying that Swede was shortened to turnip, but used the term 'Swedes were known as turnips' in the context of the posting. Depending on the nationality of the perosn you ask of course you'll get different answers.

In Scotland, as you quite rightly point out, what's known as Swede in England are called turnips and there's very little recognition of the little purple imposter.

I agree...I never call them swede either, always neeps. Just trying to be correct for the pedantic among us...

My Grandfather had a farm and used to farm them, we also used to feed them to the cattle.

As an Englishman living in Glasgow, I'd be daft not to agree. I had some the other day, great. Also, went past some fields in Ayrshire with them being turned out of the ground and flocks of sheep feeding on them.... and they told me that they were eating neeps.

Big and orange= neeps.
