Helmets to help Alzheimer sufferers.

No, this is not another 'knob post' but I thought it may be of great interest to some of you as I know, from my previous posts on the subject, that some of you currently have close relatives with Alzheimer's. My Dad has it.

My Mum gets the Daily Mail which, apparently, covers health issues quite a lot and, so I've noticed, seems to report any news on Alzheimer research.

Anyway, following an article in the paper I did a search and found:-

BBC NEWS | Health | Alzheimer's helmet therapy hope

Some of the other links are quite interesting ref 'a new drug within 4 years' and the cold sore link.

All I can say is that; in my family my Dad never had a cold sore ever and has Alzheimer's. My Mum always got them and, as a result, so do I (thanks Mum!) and she does not have Alzheimer's and I'm convinced I'm on the slippery slope. So that completely contradicts that theory apart from me ....... maybe?

I just wish they would come out with something quick to stop my Dad getting worse and help make Mum's life more bearable. Four years will be too long for my Dad.

Ok.
I'm trying to work out how infra-red gets through a couple of millimetres of bone...
or have they changed the design of the human skull while I wasn't looking.

Or is it a 'keep things warm' helmet in geek speak?

Love the fans. I always wanted a hat with a propeller on top. I feel it's just my image.

Thoughts are for you, your family and others. I am relieved to say I cant empathise but my sympathies are with all those who suffer at the mercies of this ruthless illness. x

Per the DM article; "Low level infra-red is thought to stimulate growth of cells of all types of tissue and encourage their repair. It is able to penetrate the skin and even get through the skull.

They offered no proof of this penetration claim (other than the improvements in their mice).

It's easier, but lots slower, than wearing a microwave ocen.

Ah, bless the Daily Mail. "Daily Mail science" is an oxymoron.

Most of the daily title have very poor science coverage, mainly reprinting press releases. The DM is simply the worst, by quite a long chalk.

If it's going to work, then surely a holiday would have the same effect and be more enjoyable?

It is not a Daily Mail article so much as a repeat of a paper published by the scientists involved. You will note my above link is actually to the BBC web site.

I don't know.

Unfortunately, my science knowledge is not sufficiently good ref infra-red wave lengths/intensities etc nor is there sufficient detail given in the report on the 'specifics'.

I was hoping that someone on here may have already heard about this and know
more about it. I will have a more thorough search across the internet when at home.

Believe me, when you are watching a loved one turn into ........ well, any straw, and all that.

Lastly, my Mum keeps all the newspaper articles and takes them up to the Consultant (who reviews my Dad's state of decline every 6 months) to get his opinions on the validity of the information, the hope (or lack of) of getting involved in any trials and any other developements.
