| An Angel for the South? On the radio this morning, news that five "famous" artists, two of them "Turner artists" will be asked to design something "iconic" and "representative" of the South of England. More here. So, what do you think would be appropriate? Nicky Campbell (bless his nasty little heart) suggested that maybe it should be a large figure standing with open arms welcoming the diversity of peoples to this land, or somesuch. To be fair I'm not sure that was his idea - I don't think he does original thought. Somebody else suggested a clenched fist holding a wad of money. Not bad, but I think the Harry Enfield "Loads-a-money" character would be a little more eye-catching. My first thought was a "boot stamping on a human face - for ever", but then that's neither original nor particularly unique to the South. Maybe a massive arse mooning towards Europe, or if you know your Lord of the Rings, possibly something like those two huge statues standing guard at Argonath... ![]() So, what do you think? I suppose they'll end up with something "inspiring" that will cost millions and will be immediately condemned by almost everyone, leading gradually to a grudging acceptance, and eventually a sense of understated pride. Much like the Angel of the North then ![]()

| It'd look better on the Dover coastline pointing Francewards. ps, I did hear that our angel is wearing out, the corten steel with which it is made has a rustproof oxide layer, but people are sitting at it's feet and rubbing this layer off, so in about a billion years it'll fall over.

| How about a giant Nigella? The channel tunnel could join up to her foof and you could hold the olympics inside her norks? Here's another completely gratuitous posting of the life size chocolate Nigella statue to demonstrate what I mean. ![]() ![]()

| Oh God. If we are going to have some god awful structure like that rusty nosedived aeroplane, I think i will move to Scotland. Or somewhere warm. We would end up with something like a statue of a £50 note.
