I emailed Air Malta regarding this on 13.2.08 and got the following reply the same day :-

'There is no longer be required to have a note on your ticket or in your reservation stating that you are carrying sporting equipment to entitle you an extra 15kilos baggage allowance.
Please note that one will be asked to verify the equipment at check-in so this should be easily accesible in the luggage'
