i've seen gazza play over the years, when he was at his" peak"

he was a great midfielder.passinate about the game and had a great free kick.

its a shame he has ended up like this. drink and drugs have taken their toll.

in fact very possibly ruined his life,with beatin his wife as well in past years.

he also had a chance of management, altho a small club, he blew that too

it is a shame to end up like he has

Sadly its the George Best scenario all over. You get fame and fortune then either sniff it up your nose, smoke it or drink it. He's lived the highlife and now the lowlife and had a bevvy of girls to boot! I wonder if he's vomitted on any.

Sad though to think his talents were only really shortlived, but as I said above - George Best scenario.

It is sad and maybe it will be good for him. I hadn't realised he was only 40 !

I don't follow football, not since Georgie Best stopped playing anyway but I'm sure England's Gazza deserves some help

EDIT :- having seen ref to Georgie. GB was one of the 1st footballer/sports personalities to be treated like some kind of movie star and I really don't think he was prepared for that. He should have been offered way more support and advice. I don't feel the same applies to Gazza, Beckham etc. They expect it all now

Maybe cos he was the first, the support structure wasn't in place or thought to be needed? Still, very sad.

The problem seems to set in when they are no longer a celebrity footballer and become and ex-celebrity footballer with no real purpose in life other than being famous for being a has-been. It's almost like they have to become a hell-raiser to keep themselves in the public eye. It is very sad.

Yes, but I always felt the celebrity and all the hangers on actually caused Georgie to stop playing professionally far earlier than he would, or ought to, have. Like I say, I don't follow football but Georgie was certainly something special.

Is this not like "life in the spotlight" in general anyway. Most celebrities, even though they are human like the rest of us, get treated like someone/thing better.

Football, because of the status and vast amounts of money paid to players comes with a price for some and as Helen stated, when they retire, or are no longer needed and regarded as a hero, what else is there for them!

Some try management and succeed, or emigrate to another country to regain popularity, others end up like Gazza. Sad as it is, its reality. George Best took full advantage of fame and fortune and was still hailed a hero even after his death, albeit he drank his life away. If you look at his track record of playing, it was a short lived career, compared to some.
