Scared the crap out of me last night - it hit just as I put some stuff down on a unit in the lounge and I thought I'd knocked a load of stuff off! Whole house shook and family woke up.

Bit of a tangent, but I did hear something the other day saying that the poles are due to swap. Apparently it happens from time to time but I wasn't paying much attention and can't remember the details! Could have been on Qi or something

Talking

We were talking to one of our clients from West orkshire this morning and she was woken up by the shudder, said it was the first time in years that she'd felt the earth move for her.
Also, her little daughter got woken up and went into her bedroom to ask mummy what was going on, first time the earth shook for her too!!

They have experiences early these days in Yorkshire!

Time for a cuppa.

For those that felt the earthquake we have an online questionnaire to fill in. This helps in comparing current quakes with historical ones (before the days of seismographs) and also in understanding the damage they cause. So it would help if you take a few minutes to fill out your experiences:

I woke with a bit of a shock, long suffering GF felt nowt, which is not unusual for her but we were about a mile apart.

Poles are due to shift, but not in our lifetimes, read something in Focus (about the only thing I can't do these days)

Mym

ps, waiting for aftershocks

We were awake - I got blamed - "Paul what are you doing?"

It was weird that the car alarms weren't set off, given the way the house shook

I was working in a Nursing Home last night and it was scary to say the least, the pillars in the lounge physically shook as did all the windows and the floor was vibrating, the roar it made was horrendous and lasted about 10 seconds. Left us a bit shaken I can tell you.

Pardon me. Must have been the lentil and cauliflower curry I had last night.

Or maybe the Dud dropping his wallet.

According to this site, the swap happens periodically. At irregular intervals - but averaging every 300,000 years. And the last one was 780,000 years ago.

Which might suggest we're due on any minute now

Fortunately, it seems from the article that the reversal happens over a few thousand years or so and isn't a cataclysmic event. So perhaps only compass manufacturers need worry
