| I know there's a few other fishkeepers on here and possibly a few other animal lovers who may take an interest. SOme clown has invented an ipod speaker that has a very small "tank" to keep a fish in. It is cruel on 2 different levels, firstly the volume of water is insuficient to provide adequate oxygenation for the fish to "breathe" let alone actually swim. Secondly it has a built in speaker and fish are quite sensitive to noise and vibration and over time it can cause them stress which affects their health. More details of the ipond are HERE and there is a petition to sign if you are against it HERE. I know it may achieve the square root of naff all, but it just might convince someone to take it off sale, so if you are bothere, please sign it, if not, don't bother Arfie

| it goes to show there's a market for anything.... I used to keep tropical fish, but no longer do. I'm not having a pop at those on here that do keep an aquarium, but here's my thoughts on why I'm uncomfortable with the aquatics-trade My concerns are the sourcing of the raw materials, and how they are then treated as a product. A well-maintained aquarium is pleasing on the eye and very relaxing, but how often do you see this compared to poorly-kept aquaria or over-stocked setups. How prepared are the majority of customers to pet retailers for the responsibilities they are taking on when they setup an aquarium? This particular product is being marketed with "Siamese fighting fish" in the packaging. These are often displayed in small bowls and they can gulp air at the surface to deal with poorly oxygenated water, however, confining into such a small space is purely to benefit the viewer and not the fish. Sticking a speaker underneath is making it much much worse, but at what point does the average pet-shop customer make the distinction between what they find acceptable and what is not? After all, much of the stock they're purchasing will be the survivors of a wild-caught, high mortality, harvesting from the natural environment. This may be done in an unsustainable way, so how can you be sure the stock is not being produced in this way? If it's farmed fish, then is that morally better than wild-caught, when ultimately it's for your viewing pleasure? it's not that black and white is it?
